The office has been closed for three hours and I am just now leaving. It is 8pm, in October, so it is dark already.

The parking garage echos with every step of my black pumps. I have my purse wrapped tight under my right arm and my keys are placed between my knuckles.

Paranoia.

I hear the settling sounds of the empty building. There’s only two cars. I can see my car. The garage was full when I got to work this morning, so I had to park at the very opposite end of the elevators. Then there’s a white Mercury Sable parked to my right, about halfway to my car.

My feet are killing me. I notice that I’m stumbling. Good thing I’m alone, or else I’d look drunk, I think to myself.

An echo from behind me.
I stop moving. I’m scared to turn around. After a few moments of waiting to hear the sound again, I turn to look behind me. I had just passed the Sable and I glance into the tinted windows.

Fear.

I think I caught a glimpse of someone moving inside the car. I step closer, and almost simultaneously, the door handle makes a popping sound, and the white dented door swings open furiously.

Fear.
Survival.

I instantly begin to run as fast I can, kicking off my heels. I can hear slow footsteps behind me, they’re not running.

I can feel my keys in my knuckles, but I realize that I wouldn’t know what to do with them if I was caught, so I don’t turn around again,

Clomp.
Clomp.
Clomp. Clomp. Clomp. Clomp.

His slow pace speeds up to a run behind me. His heavy feet sound like horses. The apocalypse.

Relief.

I finally reach my car door, fumbling I drop my purse and look for the car key on the key-chain in my hand. It seems to take forever to locate it. He is still running, I don’t dare to look back.

Tears.

Finally! I slip the key into the door handle and it unlocks with a thud. I open the door and lean into the car, he’s right behind me. I thought I had been home free, but he shoved me into the passenger seat and began hitting me in the face.

Blood.
Warmth.

I can’t see anything because there’s too much blood in my eyes. I hear him shut the door and start up the engine. He turns on the radio, loud.

Elvis.

He flips me over onto my knees and tears off my skirt, leaving my blazer top on. My face is pushed againstĀ  the glass of the passenger window.

He is breathing heavy, he smells like sweat. I hear his belt unbuckling with one of his hands, while he holds my wrists tightly back with his other hand.

My body cringes.
I wait for the pain.
My body spasms and fights against him.

He’s happy. He lets out a deep laugh in a whisper. My face and arms go numb.

Tears.
Blood.
Pain.

The stench of sex fills my nostrils. I can feel my body tearing as he forces himself inside of me repeatedly. I can’t scream, I try so hard to scream.

"Love me tender,
love me sweet,
never let me go.
You have made my life complete,
and I love you so.”
